What is a primary election?
A primary is the election where voters choose which candidate will represent their political party in the General Election. For example, Democratic voters choose among Democratic candidates, and Republican voters choose among Republican candidates.
Who can vote in Delaware’s primary?
Delaware has a closed primary. You generally must be registered as a Democrat to vote in the Democratic primary or as a Republican to vote in the Republican primary. Voters registered as No Party/Unaffiliated generally cannot vote in a party primary.
Can I vote for someone from another party in the primary?
No. In a primary, you vote only in the primary of the political party with which you are registered. In the November General Election, you may vote for candidates of any party regardless of your party registration.
What if my voter registration says “No Party – AVR”?
If you were automatically registered to vote through the Delaware DMV and your registration is listed as “No Party – AVR,” you may select either the Democratic or Republican Party through Primary Election Day, September 15, 2026, and vote in that party’s primary. You can also select your party when you go to an early-voting location or your assigned polling place. This special rule applies specifically to eligible No Party – AVR voters, not all unaffiliated voters. The Delaware Department of Elections states that the 2026 primary is the final primary in which this special AVR provision will apply.
